Dr. Del Pape on Universal Health Care

The Ultimate Health Care Solution: What Say You?

Wellness is the ultimate solution to solving America’s health care crisis because it requires us to take responsibility for our own well-being, with common sense practices.

Like most things, we don’t value our health until we lose it. Expecting a pill or surgery to cure us is a futile strategy, much like the universal health care bill which fixes nothing.

Health care spending in the United States is more than 1.8 trillion per year, more
than four times the amount spent on national defense and almost forty times the amount spent on homeland security. Experts predict retiring elderly couples will need $200k in savings just to pay for the most basic medical coverage. The unbelievable high cost of health care in the US could be justified if the astronomical expense led to better health among the population.

What is causing the crisis? The fact is the volume of sick people has risen substantially, loading up our hospital beds, over utilizing clinics and feeding our desire for prescription drugs. Americans comprise only five percent of the entire world’s population and consume fifty percent of all prescription drugs manufactured globally, computing to over three billion prescriptions each year. So, how can we reduce the number of sick people? We know seventy to ninety percent of health care costs are directly related to preventable lifestyle diseases and illness. Let’s start there.

1.      Taking responsibility and living and leading a pro-active healthy lifestyle
in all dimensions is the ultimate solution. Health is not merely the absence of disease any more than wealth is an absence of poverty. Simply feeling fine does not prevent strokes, heart attacks and cancer. There is no better time than right now to create necessary changes.

2.      Nothing in life comes for free. What would it look like or feel like if you
were functioning at one hundred percent of the time? How would you wake every morning? How would your relationships change in your life? Would parents instill healthy goals and principles for their children no matter how difficult it becomes?

We all share this responsibility to ourselves, our fellow citizens and our country. We don’t live in a box. We breathe the same air, eat the same food and share the same soil. Promote wellness in your life. California is the most abundant resource for health and well being. Just by living here, we have an opportunity to enjoy this type of prosperity. Make a change and live towards a healthy prosperous lifestyle.
